PACT 路 Product carbon footprint

The carbon footprint of your product, built up along the supply chain.

PACT calculates the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of a product, component or production batch under the PACT Methodology V3. You take over your suppliers' footprints, add what happens in your own plant and pass the result on to your customer, who continues the same way.

How PACT works

  • Cradle to gate

From raw materials to the gate of your plant: supplier materials and components, transport they do not include, your own production, energy, waste and packaging.

  • Supplier footprints as inputs

Take over a supplier's footprint as one input, from an EnvironmentalReport declaration, a PACT V3 or a Catena-X PCF file, enter the quantity you consumed and continue. The original file stays attached.

  • For your customer

A customer PCF declaration as JSON and PDF, the PACT V3 exchange and a Catena-X PCF file. By default only the total is shared.

  • Enter data once

A PACT project can reuse the annual activity data of your VSME report, with its own boundary and suitable factors.

PACT Methodology V3

The calculation follows the PACT Methodology V3 (revision 3.0.1) on IPCC AR6 GWP100. The app checks its rules for the reference period, the declared unit, exclusions below 3 %, allocation, electricity and contractual instruments, transport and waste. Incomplete evidence stays visible; a missing value never becomes zero.

The footprint is calculated both excluding and including biogenic carbon uptake in the product. Outbound logistics are disclosed separately and never added to the footprint.

Built up along the supply chain

Each company in the chain calculates the footprint of its own product up to its factory gate. The customer takes it over as one input, sets the consumed quantity and adds its own processes, so the footprint grows step by step from the raw material to the finished product.

A supplier footprint is counted once; you add only the transport or processes it does not already include. The input breakdown is shared with a customer only when you choose to and your suppliers have consented.

Seven steps of a study

  • Setup: company, product, functional unit, batch output, reference year and boundary
  • Inputs & suppliers: materials and components, supplier footprints, inbound transport, own operations and packaging
  • PACT methodology: the methodology checks for each scenario
  • Sources and evidence: source documents and the retained original files
  • Results: the footprint per functional unit and for the batch, by input and by stage
  • Review: assumptions, results and the internal review
  • Sign-off: an issued revision that no longer changes

Reports and data

  • Customer PCF declaration (JSON and PDF)
  • PACT V3 exchange (JSON) for partners
  • Catena-X PCF (io.catenax.pcf 10.0.0) as a file
  • Internal PDF report, Excel calculation tables, study data and a calculation audit package

What PACT is not

PACT covers the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of physical products. It is not a multi-impact life-cycle assessment, an EPD, a cradle-to-grave or a building assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is the app a PACT Conformant Solution?

Not yet. PACT is available in the app as a pilot, and the calculation follows the PACT Methodology V3. The app does not certify conformance with PACT or Catena-X; recognition as a conformant solution is a separate step that has not been completed.

Do we need a VSME report to use PACT?

No. PACT is a separate project. If you also prepare a VSME report, the PACT project can reuse its activity data.

Can we use our suppliers' footprints?

Yes. Take over the supplier's footprint and count it once; add only transport or processes it does not already include.

Will our customer see our suppliers?

Not by default. Only the total is shared; the breakdown by input is included only when you choose it and your suppliers have consented. The PACT V3 exchange file always contains just the total.
